For more than 30 years, Garry Harrison has been involved
with the preservation and promotion of downstate Illinois's traditional
music legacy. Garry
and a group of friends independently documented the traditional fiddle
music of downstate Illinois as performed by its last remaining sources
throughout the 1970s and '80s. The group disseminated the music via three
LP records made in 1976-78 under their string band identity, the Indian
Creek Delta Boys. In 2000, Garry Harrison and the Mule Team released
a CD of mostly Garry's original fiddle pieces entitled "Red Prairie
Dawn". In 2007, Harrison and co-author Jo Burgess published the
only substantial work documenting the traditional music of downstate
Illinois, the book and companion 3-CD set of field recordings, "Dear
Old Illinois". Over the years, Garry has won several fiddle and
band contests across the country and has taught week-long fiddle camps
and numerous single-day workshops.
